UPDATED: Brad Ashford’s Stands With Obama’s Plan To Close Gitmo

Congressman Brad Ashford (D-NE) wants voters in Nebraska’s Second Congressional District to believe he has always stood up the Obama Administration’s reckless plan to close the Guantanamo Bay detainee facility. In light of the news that two additional militants that the President Obama has released have rejoined the fight, a closer look at Congressman Ashford’s record is necessary.

Twice in 2015 Ashford voted for amendments that would have eased the way for President Obama to transfer detainees out of Guantanamo Bay and close the detainee holding.

  • On June 10th, Ashford voted for the second Nadler Amendment. The purpose of amendment was to loosen the provision in the NDAA that prohibits funds from being used to transfer detainees from Guantanamo Bay.
  • On June 16th, Ashford voted for Schiff Amendment To H.R. 2596. This vote would have also loosened “restrictions on detainee transfers from Guantanamo Bay” found in the NDAA.

These votes show that Ashford’s rhetoric that he will “continue to oppose every effort of the President to close the Guantanamo Bay detention camp and I do not support any transfers of detainees,” is not accurate. In fact, Ashford has even said that he “doesn’t regret his previous vote” that would have made it easier to transfer Guantanamo Bay detainees.  Ashford’s own record betray his mixed record when it comes to Guantanamo Bay.
