BREAKING: Obama Admin Confirms Colorado Gitmo Plan, Puts Bennet In A Bind
According to a report from CNN’s Jake Tapper, Defense Secretary Ash Carter confirmed Thursday that the Obama administration is actively seeking to transfer Guantanamo Bay detainees – including terrorists – to the United States. Tapper specifically referenced Colorado as a target location for the transfers.
National security-focused news outlet Defense One reports that whichever U.S. facility is selected would hold the “worst of the worst” detainees.
This puts already-unpopular Colorado Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet in quite a bind. As a senator, Bennet has marched in lockstep with President Obama’s quest to bring Guantanamo terrorists to the homeland. But facing a tough reelection, Bennet suddenly started talking out of both sides of his mouth, continuing to support the President’s policy but claiming to oppose efforts to bring the detainees to his own state.
Now that President Obama appears ready to put his money where his mouth is when it comes to his plan to create “Gitmo North,” Bennet will be forced to take a clear position – either he stands behind his multiple votes enabling the closure of Guantanamo and transfer of prisoners, or he’s flip-flopping in an election year.
But with Bennet’s record of embracing President Obama – at times literally – any attempt to reposition himself to win votes will be met with skepticism from Coloradans.
