Daddy’s Special Candidate: Privileged Patrick Continues To Get Financial Support From His Father

DC Democrats might have abandoned Patrick Murphy, but at least he still has one big money supporter left: his father. Thomas Murphy has given his son jobs and companies, and now it looks like he’ll continue to fund his son’s ill-fated Senate campaign until the very end. The Miami Herald reported this weekend that Thomas Murphy gave an additional $250,000 donation to a Super PAC supporting his son. This contribution was one fourth of the total contributions to the group during the quarter:

“A super PAC supporting Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Patrick Murphy raised about $1 million in the past three months — including a $250,000 check from Murphy’s multi-millionaire father. The donation was reported in a quarterly financial disclosure report filed with the Federal Election Commission just before midnight on Saturday evening, the day of the reporting deadline. The pro-Murphy ‘Floridians for a Strong Middle Class’ reported entering October with $764,000 in cash on hand to spend in the final weeks of the campaign.”

This is just the latest in a long series of donations Murphy made to support his son. During the summer Murphy’s father gave $1 million to Senate Majority PAC, which immediately used that money on Murphy’s behalf in TV ads against his then-primary opponent, Alan Grayson. The group did not intervened in any other primary race in 2016. This shady series events drew an FEC complaint from the nonpartisan group FACT for illegal coordination.

Thomas Murphy’s $1 million contribution to Senate Majority PAC was on top of an earlier $500,000 he directed to Floridians for a Strong Middle Class for Murphy’s Senate race. Murphy’s financial supporter from his father did not start during his Senate race. Murphy received $550,000 in financial support from his father during his 2012 congressional race.

Murphy might have turned out to be one of 2016’s worst candidates, but these repeated donations show that at the end of the day he still has a very wealthy father. So when you think about it Murphy might be a loser, but he’s still a loser with a father that will probably buy him a consolatory jet ski to ride when he’s on Cocktails after Election Day.
