FACT CHECK: Biden Falsely Claims ‘Vast Majority’ of Migrant Families Coming to the Border Are Being Sent Back

President Biden’s claim Thursday that a “vast majority” of migrant families coming to the U.S. are being sent back was false, according to a fact check from multiple media outlets.

In his first formal press conference since taking office, Biden said the U.S. is “sending back the vast majority of the families that are coming.” But Biden’s claim is directly refuted by recent data from the Department of Homeland Security.

“That was not true in February, which is, of course, the last month for which we have a full month’s data,” Dale said. “It was 41 percent of migrants … as part of family units … who were swiftly sent back, expelled.” – The Hill

Other media outlets, such as The New York Times and NBC News, also determined Biden’s claim to be false.

“This is false. Federal officials recorded about 19,000 encounters with families at the southwestern border in February. Of those, about 7,900 families, or 42 percent, were expelled, far short of a majority. According to Axios, that rate was 13 percent last week.” – The New York Times

“That is not true for the month of February. Less than half the nearly 20,000 apprehensions of family units were returned under Title 42, according to CBP data.” – NBC News

Bottom line: The crisis at the border was created by the Biden administration’s misguided rhetoric and radical policies, and now they’ve been caught lying to the American people.
