FLASHBACK: Planned Parenthood Of Virginia “Extremely Disappointed” With Tim Kaine
When Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards addresses the Democratic National Convention tonight, one thing you can bet she won’t mention is her organization’s past criticism of Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA).
Back in 2009, when Kaine was both Governor of Virginia and chairman of the Democratic National Committee, he signed a bill creating a “Choose Life” license plate. While Mark Warner had vetoed a similar bill, Kaine signed it saying he considered it a free speech issue. After Kaine signed the bill into law, Planned Parenthood of Virginia reacted negatively, saying they were “extremely disappointed” with Kaine:
“‘Planned Parenthood of Virginia is extremely disappointed with Gov. Kaine’s decision,’ said Jessica Honke, director of public policy for the state group. ‘The fact that the governor and the General Assembly wasted time and resources debating whether or not to further fund deceptive, nonmedical establishments is shameful,’ she said. ‘Virginia will now have a national reputation as a state that puts ideological policies before women’s health.’”
Additionally, Buzzfeed reported yesterday that when Tim Kaine first ran for governor, he compared his record on abortion with President George W. Bush. Richards’ speaking at the DNC fits in well with the nominee. Like Richards, Clinton is familiar with putting politics before principle.
