Furious Parents Recall San Francisco School Board Members

Three progressive members of the San Francisco Board of Education were recalled on Tuesday as parents and voters expressed anger with the board’s focus on woke politics and refusal to reopen schools. While schools remained closed, the Board of Education debated changing the names of schools named after important American figures — including Abraham Lincoln — and ending merit-based programs.

New York Post: Three members of San Francisco’s school board were ousted Tuesday in the wake of widespread backlash over the slow reopening of schools shut down by COVID-19 and a controversial plan to rename dozens of school sites. . .

Furious parents launched the recall effort in January 2021 after arguing the school board was pushing progressive politics instead of acting in the best interests of children amid the pandemic. “The city of San Francisco has risen up and said this is not acceptable to put our kids last,” said Siva Raj, a father of two who helped launch the recall effort. . .

The recall effort was launched as the school board was trying to rename 44 school sites that it said honored public figures linked to racism, sexism and other injustices — including Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and trailblazing US Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.).

Parents slammed the three board members and said they voted to oust them to protect students.

The recall elections, which each succeeded with more than 70 percent of the vote, is another demonstration of how powerful parents’ anger with liberal politicians is — and how dangerous it is for Democrats.

CNN: The successful effort in one of the country’s most liberal cities is likely to embolden Republicans who have channeled parental anger over school reopenings and mask mandates into a powerful wedge issue, including last fall in Virginia. For Democrats, especially those making decisions in blue states, the vote highlighted internal divisions over how to handle the pandemic as cases decline but the threat of another surge looms.

Bottom Line: You know it’s bad when residents of the liberal bastion of San Francisco are rejecting the Democrats’ disastrous education policies. Woke politics in classrooms and school closures will be a defining issue in this year’s midterms.
