Grocery Costs Skyrocket, Crushing Middle-Class Americans

The cost of groceries has risen 13.5 percent over the past year — the largest year-over-year increase since the 1970s. Rising costs, fueled by Democrats’ reckless spending, are forcing families to cut back and rack up more credit card debt.

CNN: Americans browsing the supermarket aisle will notice most food items are far more expensive than they were a year ago. Egg prices soared 39.8%, while flour got 23.3% more expensive. Milk rose 17% and the price of bread jumped 16.2%.

Meat and poultry also grew costlier. Chicken prices jumped 16.6%, while meats rose 6.7% and pork increased 6.8%. Fruits and vegetables together are up 9.4%.

Overall, grocery prices jumped 13.5% and restaurant menu prices increased 8%.

Rising prices are putting pressure on families’ financial situations. Inflation continues to outpace wage gains, giving working Americans a pay cut.

Wall Street Journal: When single mom Jamaica Bonvillian was asked about her grocery trip, she started tearing up. “I just get to the point where I break down and I’m like, ‘OK, how do I do it?’ ” she said. . .

Megan Naquin, 38, visited the supermarket with her 1-year-old and 3-year-old for a few ingredients for the breaded chicken she was making for dinner. She said she now spends more on groceries for her family of eight than on her $1,500 monthly mortgage.

“Stuff hasn’t just gone up a little bit, it’s gone up tremendously,” the homemaker said, adding that she and her husband have been trying fewer recipes and doing less cooking for fun than they once did.

Costs for other essentials including electricity, gasoline, and housing have also skyrocketed over the past 12 months. Instead of working to give consumers a break, Democrats doubled down on their massive spending by passing a tax-and-spend climate bill they named the “Inflation Reduction Act” — which may actually increase inflation.

Bottom Line: Rising prices are crushing working- and middle-class families. Democrats have not solved the problem — they only made it worse.
