During the DNC Chairmanship race, former Labor Secretary Tom Perez has consistently had to battle accusations that he’s running as a tool of establishment Democrats. Recently, after former Vice President Joe Biden endorsed Perez, Keith Ellison supporter Bernie Sanders slammed the pair as providing “a failed status-quo approach” to rebuilding the party:

“’The question is simple: Do we stay with a failed status-quo approach or do we go forward with a fundamental restructuring of the Democratic Party?’ Sanders said. ‘I say we go forward and create a grassroots party which speaks for working people and is prepared to stand up to the top 1 percent. That’s why we have to support Keith Ellison.’”

Today, former Obama Attorney General Eric Holder joined Biden in endorsing Perez. Unfortunately for Perez, Holder’s endorsement will only fuel the belief that Perez is just a lackey for the Democratic establishment:

“Holder’s endorsement also furthers a narrative about the DNC race as a proxy battle between Obama’s supporters and those of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, the 2016 presidential candidate who backs Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress. Last week, former Vice President Joe Biden announced his support for Perez.”

With extremist liberals using any pretense to protest in the streets right now, there are few more damaging charges then being in the pocket of the failed Democratic establishment. With the DNC vote just weeks away, it will be tough for Perez to overcome this emerging narrative.
