Ripped From The Headlines: Strickland Forced To Apologize After “Insensitive” Joke

Ohio Senate candidate Ted Strickland must have hoped that today’s major Ohio Senate story would be the release of his first television ad. Unfortunately for him, today could not have gone any worse. That is because this morning NTK Network released audio of Strickland joking about the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. Strickland actually had the audacity to joke that Scalia’s death was a political boon for Democrats:

“‘I mean, the death of Scalia saved labor from a terrible decision,’ Strickland said to cheers, with laughter soon filling the room as he made the joke. ‘And I don’t wish anyone ill, but it happened at a good time because once that decision had been made, it would have been tough to reverse it.’”

In a matter of minutes, Strickland’s reprehensible remarks touched off a firestorm of criticism both in Ohio and across the nation. As the Cleveland Plain-Dealer put it, Strickland’s Scalia statement was just the latest “unforced error” in his gaffe-filled campaign:

“The Scalia comment was another unforced error for Strickland, who has gotten himself in trouble before with clumsy remarks. During a February meeting with reporters and editors, Strickland acknowledged that his record on gun control was ‘mixed and spotty‘.”

Strickland was forced to quickly apologize for his “insensitive” comments. Yet as the headlines below show, the damage has been done. Strickland’s tactless jokes about Justice Scalia’s death, not his first TV ad, have dominated the conversation today:
