Tim Kaine’s Strategy: Say Or Do Anything To Win

Hillary Clinton’s continued problems with voter trust are only getting worse, but now her problems are being exacerbated by her choice of running mate. Last week, it was reported that Tim Kaine had come out against right-to-work, flip-flopping on the strong support he once gave such laws while he was Governor of Virginia.

But this isn’t the first time Tim Kaine has flip-flopped on a key campaign issue. In fact, this marks the third such reversal since Hillary Clinton announced him as VP last month.

Just days after the VP announcement, Kaine noted in an interview with CNN’s Alisyn Camerota that he had “been for the Hyde Amendment” in the past and “I haven’t changed my position on that.” But Team Clinton quickly reversed his position with a statement: “[Kaine] will stand with Secretary Clinton to defend a woman’s right to choose, to repeal the Hyde amendment.”

Finally, Kaine’s most craven flip-flop came on the TPP trade deal that Clinton herself has struggled to address this cycle. Within a single 24 hour news cycle(!), Kaine had praised the TPP as an improvement for American business standards, and then caved to pressure from the Clinton camp and opposed it.

As long as issues like these persist, Clinton will struggle to regain the voters’ waning trust with her campaign.
