USA Today Ed Board: Where Are The Speech Transcripts?
The editorial board of USA Today took Secretary Clinton to task this morning for her refusal to release transcripts of speeches she delivered behind closed doors for huge sums of money. The issue has become an albatross around Clinton’s neck in the Democratic primary, which has become a race to the left thanks to the success of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.
In part, USA Today blasted Clinton’s hypocrisy on the issue:
During his tough primary challenge to Clinton, Sen. Bernie Sanders, the self-described democratic socialist from Vermont, has pressed her repeatedly to release the transcripts of the private engagements. So have reporters. Clinton has responded with evasions, lately some variation on: “Let everybody who’s ever given a speech to any private group under any circumstances release” their transcripts.
Of course, that misses the point. Unlike “everybody,” Clinton is running for president on a platform that includes being tough on banks.
Over and over (and over and over), Clinton has been grilled on releasing these transcripts, and she has repeatedly dodged taking any responsibility for their release. The issue has only served to enrage the far left of her party – a core constituency she will need in the general election.
