While Clinton Fights To Close GITMO, Former Detainees Fight For Al Qaeda
Yesterday, it was reported that a former Guantanamo Bay detainee was featured in a new propaganda video for Al Qaeda. The detainee, Ibrahim Qosi, was released from Guantanamo Bay in 2012 following a 2010 plea deal and rejoined Al Qaeda in 2014. He had previously been a part of Osama bin Laden’s “elite security detail” and a leaked November 2007 Joint Task Force Guantanamo (JTF-GTMO) assessment described Qosi as a “high risk” to the U.S. and noted that he was “an admitted veteran jihadist” who “would engage in hostilities against US forces, if released:”
Despite the clear risks the Guantanamo Bay detainees like Qosi pose, Clinton has strongly advocated for closing the facility. In a 2013 memo that she sent shortly before she left the State Department, Clinton urged Obama to close the facility and suggested ways she could go around Congress to do so. The Obama administration’s current plan includes housing the detainees “considered too dangerous to release at all” in U.S. facilities, a plan Clinton supports that would pose a further danger to the U.S.
