Zephyr Teachout’s Hypocritical Carpetbagging

Zephyr Teachout, the Democratic candidate in New York’s 19th District, has proven her elitist hypocrisy throughout this campaign with a variety of issues. Now, Teachout has even demonstrated her carpetbagging status to be a case of “do as I say, not as I do.” In her 2014 book titled “Corruption In America: From Benjamin Franklin’s Snuff Box To Citizens United,” Teachout defended constitutional residency requirements for congressional races as “structural,” “bright-line” protections against self-interested and wealthy interests.

However, in both 2014 and 2016, Teachout has sought elected office under the suspicion of serial carpetbagging. Prior to her congressional run, Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo challenged Teachout’s residency in New York on the grounds that she had not lived in New York for a minimum of five years.

Although she won the legal challenge, once again Teachout has exposed herself to carpetbagging charges this campaign cycle. Teachout moved to the district from Brooklyn, and decided to run in January 2016 because “the seat opened up.” Even Democrats have expressed concerns about Teachout’s carpetbagging status.

It’s clear that Teachout has thrown her past praise for strict residency requirements out the window because she is a self-interested politician will do or say anything to get to Washington, DC.
