Over the weekend, Rep.-elect and self-described “democratic socialist” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took to Twitter to claim that $21 trillion in “Pentagon accounting errors” could have funded 66 percent of the Medicare-for-all proposal.
The New York Times and The Washington Post fact checkers agreed: “Swing and a miss!”

Ocasio-Cortez ignored the distinction from the left-leaning Nation article linked in her tweet and chose to make a direct comparison that only benefitted her policy position.
This isn’t the first time her comments have been put through the fact check ringer and deemed false. But now as she leads the House progressive caucus even further to the left, her attempts to mislead voters will come under closer scrutiny.
