Chuck Schumer Tells Joe Biden to Consider Invoking a ‘Climate Emergency’

During an interview with Rachel Maddow, Chuck Schumer said that he wanted Joe Biden to declare a climate emergency that would grant the President extraordinary powers that more reflect public health crises than environmental policy debates.

Schumer, knowing that he can’t pass Democrats’ radical climate proposals in Congress, wants to forfeit even more power to the President to act. This would also adopt the position of Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Vox: “The lawmakers introduced a joint resolution calling for the US to join 16 other countries and hundreds of local governments in declaring a “climate emergency.” New York City declared a climate emergency last month…

“…A concurrent resolution is nonbinding and does not have the force of law. But Blumenauer said this is the first step toward a Green New Deal, an ambitious progressive resolution Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) proposed earlier this year to address climate change and growing inequality.”

Schumer knows that the backlash towards his members for proposing things such as the Green New Deal would be fierce.

Politico: As Democrats rally around a fresh-sounding idea, some are looking back to Obama’s $90 billion climate package—and its disastrous political blowback.

Democrats lost seats in the House of Representatives this year partly due to the radical left-wing proposals of the progressive wing of the caucus, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
