Today, 2020 presidential candidate Cory Booker introduced a new radical policy proposal that would create a nationwide firearm licensing program and ban “assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.” According to a New York Times report:

“The most notable piece of Mr. Booker’s plan is the proposed gun licensing program, which would enact minimum standards for gun ownership nationwide. Under such a program, a person seeking to buy a gun would need to apply for a license in much the same way one applies for a passport.”

During a CNN interview on his proposal, Booker would not rule out sending gun owners who legally own their firearms to jail for not surrendering their property to the federal government.

According to the Washington Times, Booker’s far-left proposal would also:

  • Require gun owner licenses similar to drivers’ licenses, with fingerprinting, background checks and a certified gun safety course.
  • Limit gun buyers to one handgun purchase per month.
  • Increased government regulation and oversight to gun manufacturers, including allow the Consumer Product Safety Commission to enforce safety standards and issue recall orders for faulty firearms.
  • End legal immunity that prevents victims of gun violence from suing sellers and manufacturers of firearms.
  • Require handgun microstamping, a technology that enables law enforcement to identify the source of ammunition used in crimes by making a shell casing traceable to the specific gun that fired the round.
  • Expand laws that prevent people accused of domestic violence to include dating partners.
  • Ban military-style “assault” rifles, high-capacity magazines and bump stocks.
  • Overhaul the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives with increased funding, repeal of restriction on its authority to investigate crimes and crack down on gun dealers.
  • Institute universal background checks for gun sales.

Booker also had harsh words for the NRA and gun manufacturers saying they were “working … in an ungodly way to undermine the safety and security of this nation.
