As the Senate prepares to consider House Democrats’ egregious election reform bill, H.R. 1, a bipartisan group of election administrators are sounding the alarm over the bill’s unrealistic solutions.

“I don’t know what they were thinking, honestly,” said the head of an elections nonprofit. “It’s a bad bill. The goals might be admirable, but it’s a f*cking bad bill.” – Daily Beast

According to an op-ed published in the Daily Beast, H.R. 1 could lead to more problems than answers by mandating impossible election standards that our current system doesn’t have the capacity or technology to meet.

“Many of the changes the bill demands of election administrators are literally impossible to implement. Others would significantly raise the cost of elections but provide no assured long-term funding.” – Daily Beast

“The larger problem, however, is that the machines the bill requires don’t even exist yet. The Election Assistance Commission’s testing labs say they need eight to 12 more months to develop and finalize their new process for certifying vote systems to the new standards.” – Daily Beast

As a result, the confusion that would ensue from the implementation of H.R. 1 would send the next election cycle into utter chaos, according to a Democratic election director.

“Listen, I’ll do this—if the law passes, I’ll follow it,” said one state-level Democratic election director in the southeast who declined to be named. “But I can’t guarantee it’s not going to be a total clusterf*ck the first election.” – Daily Beast

Though election officials have expressed their concerns with the bill, the likelihood of resolving any of H.R. 1’s failures remain low.

“Now that it’s official the Senate didn’t have any interest in coming to realistic solutions, Senate staffers have told election officials that many of these changes can be made in committee. A lofty goal that is and, based on recent history, completely unrealistic. Even if miraculous changes could be made, election administrators say the structural challenges of the bill would be hard for election administrators to overcome.” – Daily Beast

Bottom line: Instead of trying to jam an ineffective bill through Congress for their own political gain, Democrats should focus on implementing real solutions that adequately address the problems in America’s election system.
