Feinstein Primary Challenge Will Push California To The Far-Left Fringes

Over the weekend, California state Senator Kevin de León announced he would run for the U.S. Senate, giving Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) a serious challenge with Democratic voters. In a sign of the campaign he plans to run, de León wasted no time slamming Senator Feinstein from the left:

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) will face a primary challenge from California state Senate leader Kevin de León, who cast himself on Sunday as a progressive champion of California’s resistance to President Donald Trump. Launching his campaign, de León said in an email to supporters that he will ‘take the fight to Trump from California to Washington DC,’ doing his part ‘to work even harder to reunite this nation with a progressive agenda.'”

According to the Los Angeles Times, de León‘s challenge has serious, negative implications not just for the Senate, but for many important House races in California as well:

“The announcement sets the stage for a bitter intraparty battle next year, pitting Feinstein, who epitomizes the Democratic old guard, against a member of the party’s ambitious younger generation seeking to climb the political ladder. It also presages a costly and divisive fight at a time many California Democrats argue their energy and dollars would be better spent on several congressional races in the state that could determine who controls Congress.”

In a sign of just how threatening to Senator Feinstein de Leóns announcement is, CNN reported this morning that the state Senator already has a super PAC supporting him. The new group, A Progressive California, is also laser focused on hitting Senator Feinstein from the left:

“‘We need bold leaders that will stand up and say enough is enough,’ the digital ad says over images of de León, who is credited with ‘leading the resistance against Donald Trump in California.’ ‘We need a fearless leader to stand up for our values in the US Senate,’ the narrator concludes, without ever mentioning Feinstein. ‘We need Kevin de León.'”

Far-left activists have long wanted to push Senator Feinstein out of the Senate. With de León’s entry into the race, they now have a legitimate candidate to back. California Democrats are in for a long 13 months.
