As a national debate ensues over opening schools in the fall, a leading teachers union in Los Angeles has provided a list of demands that must be met to ensure the “safety” of students.

According to a report from The Daily Caller, their demands go far beyond measures to prevent the spread of COVID. Among them are passing a single-payer health care system, implementing a wealth tax, and defunding the local police department.

Ironically, the UTLA also denounced President Trump’s “anti-science” agenda while ignoring the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Daily Caller: “The American Academy of Pediatrics urged school systems in late June to re-open schools at the start of the upcoming academic year in the fall, arguing that keeping children at home poses a far greater health risk than coronavirus. Children are less likely to become infected with COVID-19, and if they do, they’re less likely to become symptomatic and spread the virus, the AAP said.”

In addition to the blatantly spurious demands listed above, the UTLA also took aim at charter schools that provide high quality education to underserved students. According to their research paper, they believe there should be a moratorium on new charter schools in Los Angeles.

None of the conditions demanded by the UTLA to reopen schools are intended to protect students. This is an unrealistic wish list of extreme policy proposals that use the education of students as leverage to advance their agenda.
