Lauren Underwood won her Congressional race on the back of her message of fixing healthcare and identifying kitchen table issues that the voters wanted to be tackled. Much of the new Democratic freshmen class embraced the same approach. But, ever since going to Congress though, she and her colleagues have done anything but tackle kitchen table issues.

Underwood has gotten off to a quick start endearing herself to far-left progressive activists by racking up one of the most liberal voting records of any member of the House. That’s right, a more liberal voting record than members of ‘The Squad,’ including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib.

Underwood has run into her fair share of controversy during her short time in Congress. In May of 2019, Underwood was questioning the acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan and suggested that the death of five migrants crossing the border was an intentional act by law enforcement. The comments were immediately stricken from the record of the hearing when Republicans, who were in the minority on the committee, were supported by Democrats.

It was an embarrassing display by the freshman representative and earned her a ban from further questioning during the hearing. Fellow freshman lawmaker Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defended Underwood in one of her patented tweets.

As Underwood continues her first and only term in Congress, it remains to be seen whether she will act on what she promised during the campaign: tackle kitchen table issues. Charles Selle of the News-Sun wrote a column for the Chicago Tribune noting that whether Underwood does or not, she will be under the political microscope.
