Liberal Dark Money Group Politicizes Coronavirus to Prop Up Steve Bullock

In the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic, Steve Bullock’s liberal dark money allies began running ads targeting his Republican opponent. The ads specifically mention COVID-19 and attempt to blame Bullock’s opponent for its spread.

Bullock has refused to condemn the ads despite being a critic of dark money and strongly criticizing the Citizens United case in Congressional testimony. This isn’t the first example of Bullock’s dark money hypocrisy:

  • While running for governor in 2012, Bullock received $1.7 million in support from the DGA. The organization received millions of dollars from special interest groups and PACs.
  • Bullock went on to serve as Chairman of the DGA, where he faced accusations of hypocrisy for his role in raising money from big corporations.
  • In 2019, Bullock held a campaign fundraiser in Washington that was co-hosted by a federal lobbyist whose clients have bankrolled dark money groups.

The dark money ads are not only inappropriately politicizing a crisis, but they also completely ignore the Trump administration’s aggressive response. Among other decisive actions, President Trump has halted all travel from Europe and China, proposed a payroll tax cut, and directed Vice President Pence to oversee the country’s response.
