Cal Cunningham recently declared his intention to challenge incumbent Thom Tillis for U.S. Senate. His campaign rollout got out to an uninspiring start.

While noting that the ballot box is the most effective way to hold an administration accountable, Cunningham still said he supported opening an impeachment investigation against the President.

Free Beacon: “2020 is an election year. Probably the most effective way to hold this administration accountable is at the ballot box,” Cunningham responded. “That having been said, I really keenly want to see the House open up an inquiry, I think they need to call the witnesses, Mueller needs to testify. I’d like to hear the evidence and where that goes.”

Cunningham noted that North Carolina voters don’t seem to care about impeachment and that he hasn’t heard about impeachment “in over 100 meetings in North Carolina.” A recent poll of the state showed that 4% of respondents felt impeachment was an important issue.

Free Beacon: “Here’s the other thing, though,” he continued. “I have been traversing this state and the question you just asked me has not come up in over 100 meetings in North Carolina.”

North Carolina is drawing a significant amount of national interest as the special election in there state’s 9th Congressional District. The Democrat Dan McCready opposes impeachment.

Cunningham recently quit the Lieutenant Governor race and entered the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate. His entrance into the race drew fire from both sides, with one of his primary opponents calling him “an opportunist.”
