REMINDER: Republicans Wanted to Sanction Russia One Month Ago and Senate Democrats Stuck with Biden

Senate Democrats may be trying to take a tough stance on Russia now, but just last month, they filibustered and defeated Senator Ted Cruz’s bill imposing sanctions on Nord Stream 2 – a Russian pipeline Joe Biden effectively greenlit for Putin last year. The Biden administration furiously lobbied Senate Democrats to reject the sanctions.

Senate Democrats decided they’d rather stick with President Biden and leave a U.S. ally out to dry than vote for Cruz’s bill, despite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s pleas for help.

New York Times: “President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has both privately and publicly urged senators to support the bill, casting Nord Stream 2 as an existential threat. The pipeline would give Russia enormous leverage over Europe and would render Ukraine’s own pipeline to Poland obsolete, depriving Ukraine of substantial revenue.”

They even bucked their own record of support for Nord Stream 2 sanctions to play partisan politics.

Politico: “Almost every senator from both parties has previously backed the sanctions outlined in Cruz’s legislation. But given Biden’s decision last year to waive the imposition of those sanctions, supporting Cruz’s effort would pit Democrats against Biden.”

Whitney Robertson, America Rising PAC Press Secretary: “Democrats emboldened Russia by prioritizing politics and staying aligned with Joe Biden over aiding an ally. Now, Americans will pay the price through further skyrocketing gas prices and higher heating bills at home.”
