Rep. Jeffries Reaps the Benefits of a Sweetheart Deal while Everyday New Yorkers Struggle

The New York Post published a look at the struggle that many New Yorkers are facing as property taxes continue to rise, with some bills doubling or tripling over the past twenty years.

New York Post: “Property taxes for low- and middle-income New Yorkers who own units in co-ops and condos have seen their bills double or triple in a span of two decades as real estate values have soared — a product which expert say is the result of a broken system.”

Not all New Yorkers who live in condos have seen their property taxes rise. Hakeem Jeffries, who serves in House Democrat caucus leadership, was able to avoid those tax hikes as he takes advantage of a sweetheart tax subsidy that he supported while in the State Assembly.

One Queens resident had a bleak assessment of her future in New York as property taxes continue to rise.

“I just find that living here is getting more and more difficult. I am going to have to work until I die.”

America Rising Spokeswoman, Kristen Bennett: “While everyday New Yorkers are suffocated by skyrocketing taxes and often forced out of the city, Hakeem Jeffries is paying around $200 per year in property taxes on his $1.2 million condo by leveraging a sweetheart tax deal that he voted for while serving in the State Assembly. The American people will remember this blatant hypocrisy the next time Jeffries has the audacity to tell others to pay their fair share.”
