Val Demings’ Flip Flop on the Iran Deal

On Wednesday, Val Demings joined 17 of her Democratic colleagues in expressing “critical concerns about the looming Iran deal.” However, Demings took a far different stance on the issue as recently as last year, prior to running for the Senate.

  • In 2020, Demings said the Iran deal gave the U.S. the ability to monitor Iran’s actions and behavior and that without it, “we have absolutely no ability to do that.” Iran had a history of breaking terms in the nuclear deal prior to President Trump’s decision to withdraw.
  • In 2019, Demings said Iran was “living up to” the nuclear deal before the United States pulled out of it because Iran wasn’t living up to the deal.
  • In 2018, Demings criticized President Trump for withdrawing from the Iran deal, claiming it was stopping Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
  • In October 2017, Demings tweeted, “Iran poses threats to security around the world – undermining the #IranDeal makes addressing those threats more difficult.”

Demings’ newfound position didn’t stop her from accepting an endorsement from supporters of the Iran deal last month.

Foreign Policy for America, who cited Demings’ actions “to safeguard our national security” in their endorsement, supported the original nuclear deal and expressed support for Biden’s negotiations with Iran to re-enter the agreement. A member of their advisory board, Ben Rhodes, was also “the chief architect of a strategy to sell the Iran nuclear agreement to the public.”

Bottom line: Val Demings’ conflicting stance on Iran should be a red flag for voters. She cares more about political expediency than acting in the best interest of Floridians.
