Kamala Harris Gambles on Controversial Prosecutorial Record
Kamala Harris is now trying to take ownership of her less than stellar record as a prosecutor.
June 11, 2019Kamala Harris is now trying to take ownership of her less than stellar record as a prosecutor. As Bloomberg notes, “until Saturday, Harris made little effort to emphasize her 13-year career as a top law enforcement official, which has faced criticism from progressives and could imperil her support among black voters.”
Her change of heart comes just as the Wall Street Journal highlighted how as San Francisco DA she failed to “adopt a policy meant to help ensure defendants get a fair trial,” going against staff recommendations.
This decision directly resulted in the well documented crime lab scandal that Harris refuses to take responsibility for. Other issues Harris faced as DA and AG that she has intentionally obfuscated include:
- Absence on reforming the cash bail system in California.
- Her role in the mortgage crisis settlement.
- Her school truancy policy that sent parents to jail.
- Support for a policy that would report undocumented minors who were arrested to ICE.
- Not supporting a statewide policy to require police body cameras.
- Attempting to keep inmates in jail as “a source of cheap labor.”
- Refusal to help sexual abuse survivors of the Catholic Church.
Now that Harris is embracing her record she will have a lot of explaining to do on how exactly she was a “progressive prosecutor.”
